Pharmacology:
Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins. It is stable against most beta-lactamases and effective against Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and anaerobic bacteria.

Dosage & Administration:
Adults: Usually 500 mg to 1 g every 8 hours intravenously depending on infection type and severity.
In meningitis: 2 g every 8 hours.
Reconstitute with suitable diluent and administer as IV bolus or infusion over 15–30 minutes. Dosage should be adjusted in renal impairment.

Interaction:
May interact with valproic acid (reducing its levels), probenecid (increasing Meropenem levels), and anticoagulants. Avoid simultaneous use with other nephrotoxic agents.

Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Meropenem or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Not recommended in patients with known severe allergic reactions to penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.

Side Effects:
Common: Diarrhea, nausea, rash, headache, phlebitis.
Serious: Seizures (especially in renal impairment), allergic reactions, Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea.

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed. Caution advised during lactation as the drug may pass into breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings:
Adjust dose in patients with renal dysfunction. Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity. Prolonged use may result in superinfections. Use under close medical supervision.

Therapeutic Class:
Carbapenem group of broad-spectrum injectable antibiotics
