Indications:
POTACIT is indicated for:
Prevention and treatment of uric acid and cystine kidney stones
Management of chronic metabolic acidosis, especially in renal tubular acidosis
Alkalization of urine in urinary tract infections where acidic urine is undesirable
Pharmacology:
Potassium citrate is metabolized into bicarbonate, which alkalizes the urine, raising urinary pH. This helps dissolve uric acid stones and prevents their formation. It also reduces calcium excretion, decreasing the chance of calcium stone formation.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 10–30 ml (in divided doses), 2–3 times daily after meals
Children: Dose based on body weight and clinical condition (as advised by physician)
Dilute in water or juice before administration
Adjust dose to maintain urine pH between 6.0 and 7.0
Regular monitoring of urine pH and serum electrolytes is recommended
Interaction:
Concurrent use with potassium-sparing diuretics (e.g., spironolactone) or ACE inhibitors may increase risk of hyperkalemia
Avoid use with aluminum-containing antacids
Use with caution in patients on cardiac glycosides
Contraindications:
Hyperkalemia
Severe renal impairment or kidney failure
Untreated Addison's disease
Acute dehydration or heat cramps
Peptic ulcer disease
Side Effects:
Nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort
Diarrhea or flatulence
Hyperkalemia (in high doses or renal impairment)
In rare cases, gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed and under medical supervision
Caution advised during lactation; consult physician
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor serum potassium levels regularly
Do not use in patients with impaired renal function without supervision
May cause gastric irritation; always take after meals and dilute properly
Maintain adequate hydration
Therapeutic Class:
Urinary Alkalinizer / Electrolyte Replacement Therapy
Storage Conditions:
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Shake well before use.
