Indications:
FERISEN 1 GM/20 ML is indicated for:
Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those on dialysis
Patients with documented iron deficiency who cannot tolerate or do not respond to oral iron therapy
Anemia in pregnancy or other conditions requiring rapid iron repletion
Pharmacology:
FERISEN contains Iron Sucrose, a complex of polynuclear iron (III)-hydroxide in sucrose. It provides a source of elemental iron for the body. After IV administration, it is taken up by the reticuloendothelial system and used for hemoglobin synthesis and other iron-dependent processes.
Dosage & Administration:
Administered intravenously (IV) only—either by slow IV injection or by infusion
Usual dose: Up to 200 mg elemental iron (in 100 mg/5 ml units) per session, depending on iron deficit
FERISEN 1 GM (1000 mg) may be given over multiple sessions or as a single infusion under close supervision
Must be diluted and administered per manufacturer's instructions
Always monitor for allergic reaction during administration
Interaction:
Should not be used with oral iron supplements concurrently
May interact with drugs affecting iron metabolism or cause misleading lab test results (serum iron/ferritin)
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to iron sucrose or any of the excipients
Anemia not caused by iron deficiency (e.g., hemolytic anemia)
Evidence of iron overload or disturbances in iron utilization
Side Effects:
Common: Injection site pain, nausea, headache, dizziness
Less common: Hypotension, muscle cramps, diarrhea
Rare: Anaphylactic reactions, chest pain, flushing
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Considered relatively safe in pregnancy (Category B) when clearly needed
Should be used during lactation only if the benefit outweighs the risk
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with asthma, eczema, or other allergies
Risk of hypersensitivity reactions — resuscitation facilities should be immediately available
Periodic monitoring of hemoglobin, ferritin, and transferrin saturation is recommended
Avoid rapid injection due to risk of hypotension
Therapeutic Class:
Parenteral Iron Preparations
Storage Conditions:
Store below 25°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
