Indications:
SIZONIL 1 MG Tablet is indicated for:
Schizophrenia in adults and adolescents.
Acute mania or mixed episodes in bipolar I disorder.
Irritability and aggression in autistic individuals.
Pharmacology:
Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic that works by modulating the activity of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin in the brain. This dual-action helps reduce psychotic symptoms, mood swings, and behavioral disturbances effectively.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults: Start with 1 mg daily, divided into two doses, with gradual titration based on response.
Adolescents/Children: Dosage must be individualized and prescribed by a physician.
Can be taken with or without food.
Interaction:
Use cautiously with CNS depressants or alcohol due to additive sedation effects.
May interact with medications like carbamazepine, fluoxetine, and antihypertensives, requiring dose adjustments.
Avoid combining with dopamine agonists due to opposing actions.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to risperidone or any component of the formulation.
Severe hepatic or renal impairment without appropriate dose modification.
Side Effects:
Common: Drowsiness, weight gain, fatigue, dry mouth, and dizziness.
Serious: Extrapyramidal symptoms, tardive dyskinesia, increased blood sugar, and prolactin elevation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Should be used only if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor (Category C).
Lactation: Use is not recommended as risperidone may be excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, or unusual behavioral changes.
Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or a history of seizures.
Long-term use may increase the risk of tardive dyskinesia or metabolic changes.
