Indications:
QUTAP is indicated for the treatment of:
Schizophrenia
Bipolar disorder (manic and depressive episodes)
Adjunct treatment for major depressive disorder
Pharmacology:
Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic that acts on various neurotransmitter receptors in the brain, including serotonin (5HT2) and dopamine (D2) receptors. It helps in reducing psychotic symptoms, stabilizing mood, and improving depression symptoms.
Dosage:
Dose varies depending on the condition:
Schizophrenia/Bipolar Disorder: Initially 50 mg/day, gradually increased to 300–800 mg/day.
Always follow physician's prescription.
Administration:
Take orally with or without food. Take at the same time each day to maintain consistent levels.
Interaction:
May interact with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole), inducers (e.g., phenytoin), and CNS depressants. Alcohol can increase sedation.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Quetiapine or any component of the formulation. Not recommended in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.
Side Effects:
Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, weight gain, orthostatic hypotension, increased cholesterol or blood sugar. Rare but serious: neuroleptic malignant syndrome, suicidal thoughts, QT prolongation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk. Caution advised in breastfeeding as it may be excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for suicidal tendencies, especially in adolescents. Caution in patients with cardiovascular diseases, seizures, or metabolic syndrome. Regular monitoring of weight, glucose, and lipids is recommended.
