Indications:
FUROTIL PLUS 500/125 MG is indicated for the treatment of:

  • Lower and upper respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis)

  • Skin and soft tissue infections

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Infections caused by beta-lactamase producing organisms

  • ENT infections (tonsillitis, otitis media)

  • Bone and joint infections (if indicated)

Pharmacology:
This combination contains:

  • Cefuroxime Axetil (500 mg): A second-generation cephalosporin that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis.

  • Clavulanic Acid (125 mg): A beta-lactamase inhibitor that enhances the activity of cefuroxime by protecting it from enzymatic degradation.

Together, they provide broad-spectrum and resistant-pathogen coverage.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Adults: 1 tablet (500/125 mg) twice daily with meals

  • Take at the same time each day

  • Complete full course as prescribed to prevent resistance

Interaction:

  • Probenecid may increase cefuroxime levels

  • May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives

  • Antacids can interfere with absorption; avoid within 2 hours

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins, penicillins, or beta-lactam antibiotics

  • Severe hepatic impairment (use with caution)

Side Effects:

  • Common: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps

  • Uncommon: Headache, rash, candidiasis

  • Rare: Anaphylaxis, liver enzyme elevation, blood dyscrasias

Pregnancy & Lactation:

  • Category B: Safe in pregnancy when clearly needed

  • Excreted in breast milk; caution advised during lactation

Precautions & Warnings:

  • Use cautiously in patients with renal or hepatic impairment

  • Monitor for allergic reactions in penicillin-sensitive patients

  • Discontinue if pseudomembranous colitis or superinfection occurs
