Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It increases serotonin levels in the synaptic cleft by inhibiting its reuptake in the presynaptic neuron. This helps improve mood and reduce anxiety symptoms.
Onset of action: May take 1–4 weeks
Half-life: ~27–32 hours
Adults: 10 mg once daily, may be increased to 20 mg if needed
Administration: Can be taken with or without food
Swallow whole with water, preferably at the same time daily
May interact with MAO inhibitors, other SSRIs, NSAIDs, anticoagulants
Risk of serotonin syndrome when used with triptans or tramadol
Alcohol may increase side effects like dizziness or drowsiness
Known hypersensitivity to Escitalopram
Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors
QT interval prolongation
Common: Nausea, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, dizziness
Less common: Sexual dysfunction, fatigue, increased sweating
Rare: Serotonin syndrome, suicidal thoughts (especially in young adults)
Pregnancy: Use only if clearly needed; potential neonatal complications
Lactation: Excreted in breast milk; monitor infant or consider alternatives
Monitor for suicidal thoughts, especially in first weeks
Caution in patients with liver/kidney impairment or seizure history
Gradual tapering required before discontinuation
Not approved for use in children under 12 without specialist advice
