Indications:
NFT 100 MG is indicated for:
Treatment of acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Prophylaxis against recurrent UTIs
Lower urinary tract infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Pharmacology:
Nitrofurantoin is rapidly excreted into the urine where it inhibits bacterial enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism and cell wall synthesis. It is bactericidal in urine and works best in acidic urine.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: 100 mg twice daily for 5–7 days for treatment
For prophylaxis: 50–100 mg once daily at bedtime
Should be taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal side effects
Interaction:
Antacids containing magnesium trisilicate may reduce absorption
May enhance toxicity of certain drugs like fluconazole
Reduced efficacy in patients with significantly impaired renal function
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Nitrofurantoin
Anuria, oliguria, or significant renal impairment
History of jaundice or liver disorder due to nitrofurantoin
Pregnancy at term (38–42 weeks) and neonates under 1 month
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, headache, flatulence, urine discoloration (dark yellow/brown)
Serious: Pulmonary reactions, peripheral neuropathy, hepatotoxicity, hemolytic anemia in G6PD deficiency
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Generally considered safe in early pregnancy but contraindicated near term
Small amounts may pass into breast milk—use with caution during breastfeeding
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function before and during treatment
Caution in elderly patients and those with diabetes or electrolyte imbalance
May cause false-positive urine glucose tests
Long-term use may cause chronic pulmonary reactions
