Indications:
SERGEL 20 MG Tablet is indicated for:
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).
Peptic ulcers caused by H. pylori infection or NSAID use.
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Erosive esophagitis.
Maintenance therapy for acid-related disorders.
Pharmacology:
Esomeprazole, the active ingredient in SERGEL 20 MG Tablet, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It suppresses gastric acid production by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase pump in gastric parietal cells, providing relief from acid-related symptoms and promoting healing.
Dosage and Administration:
Adults: 20 mg once daily, at least 1 hour before meals.
Course duration depends on the condition (e.g., 4-8 weeks for GERD).
Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.
Interaction:
May reduce the absorption of drugs requiring acidic conditions (e.g., ketoconazole, atazanavir).
May increase bleeding risk when taken with warfarin; monitor INR levels.
Reduced efficacy of clopidogrel when used concurrently.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, other PPIs, or components of the formulation.
Severe liver impairment without appropriate dose adjustments.
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, headache, diarrhea, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort.
Rare but serious: Hypomagnesemia, bone fractures with long-term use, and severe allergic reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Considered safe under medical supervision (FDA Category B).
Lactation: Use with caution, as esomeprazole may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Prolonged use may increase risks of bone fractures or vitamin B12 deficiency.
Monitor magnesium levels if used for an extended period.
Discontinue use immediately if severe allergic reactions occur.
