Indications:
IMAGIN 500 mg is indicated for the treatment of:

Anaerobic bacterial infections (e.g., bacterial vaginosis, intra-abdominal infections)
-
Protozoal infections such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis
-
Dental infections and periodontal diseases
-
Pelvic inflammatory disease
-
Post-surgical infections caused by susceptible organisms
Pharmacology:
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that works by entering bacterial and protozoal cells and disrupting their DNA synthesis, leading to cell death. It is bactericidal and effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa.

Onset: Within 1–2 hours

Half-life: 6–8 hours

Excretion: Mainly renal
Dosage & Administration:
-
Adults: 500 mg orally every 8–12 hours depending on infection severity

Complete the full course even if symptoms improve
-
Take with food to reduce stomach upset
-
Do not consume alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after completion
Interaction:
-
Alcohol causes severe disulfiram-like reaction; avoid alcohol during and 48 hours post-treatment

Increased anticoagulant effect when combined with warfarin
-
May interact with phenytoin and lithium
-
Avoid concomitant use with disulfiram
Contraindications:
-
Hypersensitivity to Metronidazole or related compounds

First trimester of pregnancy unless benefits outweigh risks

Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders
Side Effects:

Common: Nausea, metallic taste, headache, dizziness

Less common: Abdominal discomfort, dry mouth, fatigue

Rare: Peripheral neuropathy, seizures, hypersensitivity reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation:

Pregnancy: Generally avoided in first trimester unless necessary

Lactation: Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; caution advised
Precautions & Warnings:

Avoid alcohol to prevent flushing, nausea, vomiting

Monitor for signs of neuropathy or CNS effects during prolonged use

Use with caution in patients with liver impairment

Inform physician if any allergic reactions or neurological symptoms develop
