Replacement therapy in primary, secondary, or tertiary hypothyroidism.
Management of thyroid disorders such as goiter and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
Suppressive therapy for certain types of thyroid cancers.
Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroxine (T4) hormone. It compensates for deficient thyroid hormone levels, restoring normal metabolism, protein synthesis, and energy utilization.
Dosage: Typical initial dose for adults is 50-100 mcg daily, adjusted based on TSH levels and clinical response.
Administration: Take orally on an empty stomach, preferably 30 minutes before breakfast.
Reduced efficacy when taken with iron or calcium supplements; maintain a 4-hour gap.
May interact with antidiabetic drugs, anticoagulants, and estrogen-containing medications.
Known hypersensitivity to Levothyroxine or tablet excipients.
Uncontrolled adrenal insufficiency, untreated thyrotoxicosis.
Common: Palpitations, nervousness, insomnia, and weight loss.
Rare: Allergic reactions, cardiac arrhythmias, or hyperthyroid-like symptoms from overdosage.
Safe during pregnancy as maintaining normal thyroid levels is critical for fetal development.
Levothyroxine is excreted in minimal amounts in breast milk; generally considered safe.
Monitor thyroid function periodically to avoid under- or over-treatment.
Use cautiously in elderly patients or those with cardiovascular disease.
