Indications:
ACIFIX 20 MG is indicated for the treatment of:
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Peptic ulcers
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome
Erosive esophagitis
NSAID-induced gastric ulcers
H. pylori eradication therapy (as part of combination)
Pharmacology:
Esomeprazole is the S-isomer of omeprazole and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It blocks the final step in acid production by inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells, thereby reducing gastric acidity and allowing healing of acid-induced inflammation.
Dosage:
Adults: Usually 20 mg once daily for 4–8 weeks.
Dose may vary based on the condition and physician’s advice.
Maintenance therapy may be continued at 20 mg daily.
Administration:
To be taken at least 1 hour before meals.
Swallow whole with water. Do not chew or crush the tablet.
Interaction:
May interact with drugs like ketoconazole, atazanavir, clopidogrel, diazepam, and warfarin.
Prolonged use may affect absorption of vitamin B12 and magnesium.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to esomeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles, or any component of the formulation
Not for immediate relief of heartburn symptoms
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence
Rare: Vitamin B12 deficiency, low magnesium, risk of bone fractures with long-term use
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Classified as Pregnancy Category B.
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed.
Caution advised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Prolonged use may lead to gastric malignancy masking
Monitor magnesium and B12 with long-term use
Use with caution in liver-impaired patients
