Indications:
Used to treat essential hypertension and to reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease.
Pharmacology:
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II by selectively binding to AT1 receptors. This leads to vasodilation and decreased blood pressure.
Dosage:
The usual starting dose is 20 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on patient response, as directed by a physician.
Administration:
Should be taken orally with or without food. Take at the same time each day for best results.
Interaction:
May interact with potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, NSAIDs, and other antihypertensive agents. Monitor potassium levels and kidney function if taken with other medications.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Telmisartan
Pregnancy
Severe hepatic impairment
Bilateral renal artery stenosis
Side Effects:
Dizziness, hypotension, fatigue, diarrhea, and elevated potassium levels. Rarely, renal impairment or angioedema may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Not recommended during lactation unless clearly necessary and under medical supervision.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use cautiously in patients with renal or hepatic impairment.
Monitor blood pressure, electrolytes, and renal function regularly.
Not for use in children without medical advice.
Avoid excessive potassium intake.
Therapeutic Class:
Angiotensin-II receptor blocker (ARB)
Storage Conditions:
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
