Indications:
Dextromethorphan syrup is indicated for the symptomatic relief of dry, non-productive cough caused by colds, bronchitis, or other respiratory tract irritations.
Pharmacology:
Dextromethorphan acts centrally on the medullary cough center in the brain, suppressing the cough reflex without affecting respiratory function. It is a non-narcotic antitussive agent.
Dosage:
Adults and children over 12 years: 10–20 ml 3–4 times daily
Children 6–12 years: 5–10 ml 3 times daily
Children under 6 years: only as prescribed by a physician
Administration:
Oral administration. Shake well before use. Use a proper measuring device for dosing.
Interaction:
May interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and other CNS depressants. Avoid concurrent use with these medications.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to dextromethorphan
Patients taking MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of such therapy
Patients with chronic cough due to asthma, smoking, or emphysema
Side Effects:
Possible side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Rarely, allergic reactions may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and prescribed. Caution advised during breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings:
Avoid alcohol and other CNS depressants during use.
Not recommended for children under 2 years without medical advice.
Overdose may cause CNS toxicity or hallucinations.
