Indications:
Prosan HZ is indicated for the treatment of depression associated with anxiety, restlessness, and sleep disturbances. It is also used for mood disorders and certain psychosomatic conditions.
Pharmacology:
This combination contains:
Amitriptyline: A tricyclic antidepressant that increases norepinephrine and serotonin levels by inhibiting their reuptake in the CNS.
Chlordiazepoxide: A benzodiazepine with anxiolytic and sedative properties that acts on GABA receptors to produce a calming effect.
Dosage:
Adults: 1 tablet once or twice daily or as directed by the physician.
Elderly: Start with lower doses to reduce risk of sedation and dizziness.
Always follow physician's prescription strictly.
Administration:
Take orally with water, preferably at bedtime to minimize daytime sedation. Do not drive or operate machinery after taking.
Interaction:
May interact with MAO inhibitors, alcohol, CNS depressants, anticholinergics, and other psychotropic drugs. Increases risk of sedation and respiratory depression.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, severe hepatic impairment, respiratory depression, or narrow-angle glaucoma.
Side Effects:
Common: Drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, dizziness, blurred vision.
Serious: Confusion, dependence, withdrawal symptoms on sudden discontinuation, respiratory depression (especially in elderly).
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy unless necessary. Use with caution during lactation. May cause sedation or withdrawal symptoms in the newborn.
Precautions & Warnings:
Caution advised in patients with liver or kidney impairment, history of drug abuse, or suicidal tendencies. Long-term use should be avoided due to risk of dependence.
