Indications:
Neofloxin is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and bone infections.
Pharmacology:
Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. It is bactericidal in action.
Dosage:
Adults: 250 mg to 750 mg twice daily depending on the type and severity of infection.
Dosage should be adjusted in renal impairment and as advised by the physician.
Administration:
Should be taken orally with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices. Take with a full glass of water.
Interaction:
May interact with antacids, iron, zinc supplements, theophylline, NSAIDs, and warfarin. Avoid concomitant use with tizanidine.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones. History of tendon disorders related to fluoroquinolone use. Avoid in patients receiving tizanidine.
Side Effects:
Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, abdominal pain, and rash. Rare but serious effects include tendon rupture, CNS effects (seizures), and QT prolongation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless clearly needed and prescribed by a physician.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders, seizure risk, or those taking other QT-prolonging drugs. Avoid excessive sunlight or UV light exposure during treatment.
