ATOVA 40MG Tablet is indicated for:
Management of severe hypercholesterolemia (high LDL cholesterol).
Mixed dyslipidemia (elevated LDL and triglycerides, reduced HDL).
Cardiovascular risk reduction in high-risk individuals.
Familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and children.
Pharmacology:
Atova contains Atorvastatin, a highly effective HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor:
Inhibits cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
Increases hepatic uptake of LDL cholesterol, significantly lowering serum LDL levels.
Improves HDL levels and reduces triglycerides for comprehensive lipid profile management.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: Start with 20-40 mg once daily; titrate up to a maximum of 80 mg/day based on response.
Children (10-17 years): Typically 10-20 mg daily, adjusted as necessary.
Can be taken with or without food, ideally at a consistent time daily.
Interaction:
Concurrent use with fibrates, niacin, or certain antibiotics/antifungal agents increases the risk of muscle toxicity.
Avoid grapefruit juice, as it may elevate atorvastatin levels.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Atorvastatin or similar drugs.
Active liver disease or persistent liver enzyme elevation.
Use in pregnancy or lactation is contraindicated.
Side Effects:
Common: Nausea, diarrhea, muscle pain, headache, abdominal discomfort.
Rare: Myopathy, rhabdomyolysis, liver enzyme elevation.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Category X - Not to be used during pregnancy due to potential harm to the fetus.
Lactation: Contraindicated as the drug may pass into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Regular monitoring of lipid profile and liver function tests is necessary.
Discontinue immediately if unexplained muscle pain or weakness occurs.
Use cautiously in patients with a history of liver disease or excessive alcohol use.
