Indications
INFORMET 500 mg is indicated for treating anaerobic bacterial infections, protozoal infections such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, and trichomoniasis.
Pharmacology
Metronidazole, the active ingredient, works by disrupting the DNA of anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, leading to cell death and infection control.
Dosage & Administration
Typical dose is 500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days. Tablets should be taken orally with water, preferably after meals.
Interaction
May interact with alcohol, warfarin, lithium, and other medications affecting liver enzymes.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to metronidazole, during the first trimester of pregnancy, and with blood disorders.
Side Effects
Common side effects include nausea, metallic taste, headache, dizziness, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid use in the first trimester of pregnancy. Use cautiously during breastfeeding after consulting a doctor.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after. Monitor for neurological symptoms during prolonged therapy.
Therapeutic Class
Nitroimidazole class antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent.
Storage Conditions
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
