Indications:
Olmesan 40 mg is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension. It may be prescribed as monotherapy or with other antihypertensive agents.
Pharmacology:
Olmesartan medoxomil is a selective angiotensin II receptor (type AT1) antagonist. It blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, lowering blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels.
Dosage:
The recommended dose is 20 to 40 mg once daily. Dose adjustment should be based on blood pressure response and individual patient profile.
Administration:
Can be taken with or without food. Should be taken daily at the same time for optimal blood pressure control.
Interaction:
May interact with NSAIDs, potassium supplements, lithium, or diuretics. These combinations may affect renal function or increase side effects.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to olmesartan, pregnancy, and in patients with bilateral renal artery stenosis.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include dizziness, back pain, headache, and fatigue. Rarely, it may cause hypotension, hyperkalemia, or kidney dysfunction.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters. Should be avoided during breastfeeding unless absolutely necessary.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with impaired renal or hepatic function. Monitor blood pressure regularly. Avoid abrupt discontinuation.
