Indications:
Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
Adjunct to diet and exercise
Especially useful in overweight or insulin-resistant patients
Pharmacology:
Dapagliflozin: An SGLT2 inhibitor that lowers blood glucose by preventing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to urinary glucose excretion.
Metformin (850 mg): A biguanide that reduces hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity, thus helping to control fasting and postprandial glucose levels.
Dosage:
Commonly 1 tablet once or twice daily, as prescribed by a physician
Dose adjustments depend on individual glycemic response and tolerance
Administration:
Take orally with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects
Swallow whole with water; do not crush or chew
Interaction:
Risk of hypoglycemia when used with insulin or sulfonylureas
Use caution with alcohol and drugs affecting renal function
Contraindications:
Type 1 Diabetes
Diabetic ketoacidosis
Severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m²)
Known hypersensitivity to any ingredient
Side Effects:
Common: Genital infections, UTI, nausea, bloating
Rare: Lactic acidosis, hypotension, dehydration
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Not recommended while breastfeeding without physician’s advice.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor renal function before and during therapy
Ensure adequate hydration
Temporarily discontinue during acute illness, surgery, or radiologic procedures with contrast
