Indications:
Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, meningitis, intra-abdominal infections, septicemia, and skin infections.
Pharmacology:
Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. It is resistant to most beta-lactamases.
Dosage:
Adults and children: 500 mg to 1 g every 8 hours depending on severity. Dosage adjustment may be needed in renal impairment.
Administration:
Administer intravenously after reconstitution with appropriate diluent. Use under medical supervision.
Interaction:
May interact with valproic acid, probenecid, and other nephrotoxic drugs.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to meropenem or other beta-lactams. Caution in patients with CNS disorders.
Side Effects:
Headache, nausea, diarrhea, rash, injection site reactions; rare seizures or allergic reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Use only if clearly needed. Limited data available.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use cautiously in seizure history or renal impairment. Monitor renal function during treatment.
