Indications:
Amdocal 5mg is indicated for:
Hypertension (essential and secondary)
Chronic stable angina
Vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal’s angina)
Prevention of cardiovascular events in high-risk patients
Pharmacology:
Amlodipine is a long-acting calcium channel blocker belonging to the dihydropyridine class. It inhibits calcium ion influx through L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscles and cardiac muscles, causing vasodilation, reduced peripheral resistance, and improved oxygen supply to the myocardium.
Dosage:
Adults: 5 mg once daily; can be increased up to 10 mg/day
Elderly: May start with 2.5 mg and titrate as needed
Dose adjustments may be needed in liver impairment
Maximum dose: 10 mg/day
Administration:
Oral administration once daily
May be taken with or without food
Swallow whole with water
Take at the same time each day
Interaction:
Increased effect with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., diltiazem, ketoconazole)
Risk of hypotension with other antihypertensives
May increase plasma level of simvastatin
Caution with beta-blockers, diuretics
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to Amlodipine or dihydropyridines
Severe hypotension
Cardiogenic shock
Obstructive aortic stenosis
Side Effects:
Common: Edema, headache, dizziness, fatigue, flushing
Less common: Palpitations, nausea, abdominal pain
Rare: Gingival overgrowth, hepatic enzyme elevation
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy Category C
Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
Use with caution in breastfeeding mothers
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor blood pressure regularly
Use cautiously in patients with severe heart failure or liver disease
May cause postural dizziness—avoid sudden position changes
Not recommended for use in hypertensive emergencies
