Indications:
GASTALFET 500MG is indicated for the treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, and inflammation of the esophagus (esophagitis) caused by acid reflux.
Pharmacology:
Sucralfate is a cytoprotective agent that binds to positively charged proteins in ulcerated tissue, creating a physical barrier over the ulcer. This barrier shields the ulcer from gastric acid, pepsin, and bile salts for about 6 hours, enabling healing.
Dosage:
Adults: 1–2 tablets (500–1000 mg) two to four times daily, usually 1 hour before meals and at bedtime or as advised by a physician.
Administration:
Should be taken orally on an empty stomach. Antacids should not be taken within 30 minutes before or after taking sucralfate.
Interaction:
May reduce absorption of drugs like digoxin, ciprofloxacin, tetracycline, and phenytoin. A 2-hour gap is advised between GASTALFET and other oral medications.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sucralfate or any inactive ingredients of the tablet.
Side Effects:
Most common: constipation. Others: dry mouth, nausea, gastric upset, and in rare cases, allergic reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Generally considered safe but should be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding only if prescribed by a registered medical practitioner.

Therapeutic Class:
Anti-ulcerant (Gastroprotective agent)
