Heart failure (as part of combination therapy)
Hypertension during pregnancy (including preeclampsia)
Pharmacology
Labetalol is a combined alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptor blocker. It decreases blood pressure by reducing peripheral vascular resistance (alpha-blockade) and heart rate/contractility (beta-blockade). This dual action effectively controls hypertension and reduces the workload on the heart.
Dosage & Administration
Initial dose: 100 mg twice daily
Maintenance dose: May be increased to 200–400 mg twice daily depending on response
Must be taken with or after food
Dose adjustments should be made gradually under medical supervision

Increases the effect of other blood pressure-lowering drugs
Should not be used with other beta-blockers concurrently
Contraindications
Bronchial asthma or other obstructive airway diseases
Severe bradycardia (slow heart rate)
Heart block greater than first degree

Use with caution in patients with diabetes, kidney or liver problems
Abrupt discontinuation may worsen angina or cause rebound hypertension
Therapeutic Class
Beta-Adrenergic Blocker (Non-selective)
Antihypertensive Agent
Storage Conditions
