ATOVA 20MG Tablet is indicated for:
Primary hypercholesterolemia (elevated LDL cholesterol).
Mixed dyslipidemia (elevated LDL and triglycerides, decreased HDL).
Primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases in at-risk patients.
Management of familial hypercholesterolemia in adults and children.
Pharmacology:
Atova contains Atorvastatin, a selective and potent HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor:
Reduces hepatic cholesterol synthesis.
Increases hepatic uptake of LDL cholesterol, effectively lowering serum LDL levels.
Enhances HDL levels and reduces triglycerides, improving overall lipid balance.
Dosage & Administration:
Adults: Begin with 20 mg once daily; titrate as needed up to 80 mg/day.
Children (10-17 years): 10-20 mg once daily based on lipid levels and physician’s advice.
Can be taken with or without food, ideally at the same time each day.
Interaction:
Co-administration with fibrates, niacin, or certain antifungal and antibiotic agents may increase muscle toxicity risk.
Grapefruit juice increases atorvastatin levels; intake should be limited.
Contraindications:
Known hypersensitivity to Atorvastatin or related drugs.
Active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations in liver enzymes.
Pregnancy and lactation.
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, fatigue, nausea, muscle pain, abdominal discomfort.
Rare: Rhabdomyolysis, severe muscle damage, or liver dysfunction.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy: Category X - Contraindicated due to potential fetal harm.
Lactation: Avoid as the drug may pass into breast milk and harm the infant.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor liver function and lipid levels periodically.
Discontinue in cases of unexplained muscle pain or weakness.
Use with caution in patients with a history of liver disease or alcohol abuse.
Therapeutic Class:
Lipid-lowering agents (Statins).
